Aloha & Welcome to
James Beard Award-winning Chef Roy Yamaguchi’s grandfather, Rokuro Yamaguchi, was a trailblazer who immigrated to Hawaii to work in the plantations. He later became a successful entrepreneur and businessman, opening the Yamaguchi Store (aka the Humble Market Kitchin) and several tavern-like restaurants in Kihei and Wailuku.
Roy spent his summers at the Yamaguchi Store and creates a menu inspired by the flavors he recalls from his childhood. His grandfather often prepared delicious family meals with fresh fish caught off the beach, small shellfish gathered from the rocky shoreline, pork given to the family from a hunting trip and papaya and pineapple picked from the backyard. Yamaguchi captures the sweet and savory flavors he recalls for the menu and also showcases an array of dishes that feature the scale of vibrant flavors throughout the state – with influences from countries such as Japan, China, Portugal, Korea, and the Philippines.
